Episode 1: Attention of the Dark One

I only listened to about three minutes before tapping out. This has all the hallmarks of moderately competent fan fiction. Its prose is extremely breezy with unnecessary and prolix interior dialog. (After oversleeping followed by a car almost hitting him as he crossed a street:) “Huh. Perfect. This day is really starting off on a high note.” There are awkward word choices and unclear images: “His gaze swept accross the profile of his school a few blocks away.” Perhaps most telling is that the author has no idea what the daily life of professionals is like. The protagonist’s parents are environmental attorneys who are border-line neglectful because of their frequent, sudden travel to different environmental causes. Needless to say the actual practice of environmental law is rather less exciting. All of these things are forgivable on AO3; a published work adapted into a audio screenplay ought to be higher quality. [I apologise for the wall of text. I don’t know how to insert a newline]

Loved reading this series, and the SBT treatment just elevates it so much! The prologue gave me actual chills!

I’ve only read a few LitRPG titles, but this had solid character and world establishment without meandering too long. The production quality and audio direction / narration is exceptional! A very enjoyable first episode!

This is how Jack Thompson thinks videogames work. oof. I found the protagonist really unsympathetic and rhe world even worse. the story beat with his evaluation has sparked my interest in another episode.

im coming from reading the OG novel back in 2018. While i can now see some weird quirks in Travis's earlier writings, i feel that future novels mature greatly. That said, i love hearing this production, second only to a live stage play or TV production. the only issue i can note sometimes is difficulty being able to hear some meta-narration when whar its describing is being sound effected alongside it. i think it only happened a few times, and the production did good placing those narrations after the brunt of the sound effects where balancing for them would have cheapened the effect just to hear the narration

After reading all of Travis' Awaken Online books and listening to the Audible versions, I find it hard to choose a favourite. But as a famous nun said, the beginning is a very good place to start! The whole series is great, each book building on the previous and all of the characters are compelling. Though only the first episode is currently available, if the quality continues as in the first, it will be a fantastic ride!

I have read these books four times over and this production captures everything I love of them right from the start. I genuinely hope this continues beyond the first book and into the greater story of the entire series! Excellent work!

From the actors to the composer and sfx artist - every single detail is well thought out and executed with precision by a team of incredible artists. Obviously a perfect team effort…and Ryan’s fierce, just the best ever (this is definitely not Ryan reviewing his own ****) 🤓
